October 24 E-Letter

Dear Parents of St. Sebastian School,

I have been extremely impressed by the leadership our middle school students have shown as they campaigned for a position on student council. Giving speeches isn’t easy and much less in front of your peers. You were all remarkable! Congratulations to all who participated, I look forward to a wonderful year of student led activities.

I have been equally amazed by the love and care with which all of our parents have volunteered their time and resources to make our school events successful. Thank you students and parents for always demonstrating a positive attitude no matter what the challenge!

Souplantation Fundraiser Nov. 2nd
Don’t have time to physically come and volunteer at school? Call in an order of food for you, the family, or your co-workers at Souplantation. Our school will receive 30% of all sales made when you say you’re with St. Sebastian School. Order all day on Nov. 2nd from the following location 11911 San Vicente Blvd

8th Grade Parent Meetings/Events
Our Oct. 19th parent meeting was a complete success. If you’ve already signed up your child for HSPT prep classes and are considering a second class, there are sessions offered through Loyola High School, St. Bernard High School, and St. Monica. The 26th of Oct. from 3:15-4:15 we will have a high school application boot camp where we’ll be going through important pieces of the application process with students.. Nov. 30th we’ll have a St. Sebastian Alum night where we’ll be asking St. Sebastian students that are currently at a Catholic high school to join us in sharing what their experience has been like. We can’t wait to hear that all of our students will be applying Catholic high school!

Jog-a-thon/Hop-a-thon 
It was awesome to see our students being healthy, our parents volunteering, and all of this to help our school! We can’t wait to announce the winners of our prizes next week. Parents please be aware that your child was sent home with their sponsor form that contains the number of laps they ran, or hops they jumped if they are in preschool. Those students who turned in sponsor forms with payment included, your sponsor form has a notation of paid in full. All other students, please turn in your sponsor forms with payment to the front office by Wednesday, Oct. 26th, to be eligible for the great Jog-a-thon prizes. Feel free to continue collecting sponsors and add it to your form. Thank you for all of your support.

Enchilada Food Sale Oct. 28th
Don’t feel like cooking on Friday night? Take home or stop by for some homemade enchiladas on Oct. 28th. For $5 you’ll get two enchiladas, rice, beans, small salad and a drink. Halloween Festival Oct. 31st 
On Monday, Oct. 31st students will be allowed to dress in costume and enjoy a school parade at 9 am followed by fun games and a delicious lunch. Lunch and ticket orders have gone home with your child. Please, return order form on Wed.Oct. 26th. For costumes please remember no blood, weapons, and make sure the lengths of dresses, skirts, and shorts are at the knee. We’ll be looking to aware students for creativity! Chocolate Sale
As an opportunity to fulfill your fundraising commitment for the school year, families will be given two boxes of chocolates to sell. The school receives 50% of all sales and students that sell the most will receive a grand prize. Stay tuned for more details!

School Yard Sale Nov. 20th
Time for some overdue Spring cleaning? Need to make space for all of the new items you’ll purchase during Christmas? Tell your friends and family to deliver any items they would like to donate to the school yard sale on Nov. 14th preferably after 3:30 pm. The sale will start at 8 am and will end at 12 pm. Looking to get volunteer hours? We’ll need to borrow 10 easy up tents, volunteers to carry heavy furniture, set-up crew, volunteers with trucks to take leftovers to goodwill, four food sellers (pan dulce, champurrado, coffee, and more)

Fall Admissions Open House
On Saturday November 5th at 10AM, Saint Sebastian School will host its Fall Open House.  If you know any families that might be interested in joining us, please have them call the school or RSVP to http://www.saintsebastianschool.com/fall-open-house-2016.html .  Families that refer a student that enrolls at Saint Sebastian will be eligible to receive a reduction in registration fee for the 2017-18 school year.

2nd Family Masses and Meal, Sunday, Dec. 4th Picture with Santa
Join us in sharing our faith and building community by attending the second mass and meal of the year. All are invited and encouraged to attend our Mass celebration at 9:00 am at St. Sebastian Church. Don’t forget to stop by to take a picture with Santa in the cafeteria. Students that come in their uniform that day will get a free dress day on the following Thursday.

Sports Corner
 The girls volleyball teams are having a great season! The girls A team is currently 5-3 with a chance to make it into the playoffs. The schedule will be announced this tuesday. The girls B team is fighting through with a record of 2-3. They have 3 more games remaining. The girls C team has been dominating their opponents some games 5 vs 6 players and are undefeated at 5-0. Keep rooting for your fellow spartans as they finish the season. Basketball signups will be going up soon. Go Spartans! 

Club Corner 
Spanish Club  The school will be building our school altar for El Día de Los Muertos. This is traditionally a Mexican celebration where families remember loved ones that have passed away. The families go to the gravesites and prepare the deceased’s favorite meal, adorn the area with sugared skulls and marigolds. Senorita Gaviña is accepting photographs (labeled with the first and last name and grade of student contributing) and non perishable foods, such as food in boxes or cans for the altar. If you are able to find sugar skulls, or any animals made of sugar, marigolds, oranges (or tejocotes if you find them), please bring these items as they are traditionally placed on the altar as well. 

STEM Club is working on Engineering projects for the next couple of weeks. We have already built, bridges, buildings and planes. 

Mandarin Club 1
Meets Friday afternoon (3:00-4:05pm).
Beginner students (TK - 2nd grade).
Program: Daily class activity, 1 song, 1 book reading, 1 project and 1 written Chinese word
 
Mandarin Club 2
Meets Friday afternoon (4:10-5:10pm).
Intermediate students (2nd - 8th grade).
Program: Practice conversation, intensive reading, writing and listening comprehension.

Choir members are finishing up their Spartan School Song so that they can perform it for the school. To celebrate all their great work there will be a Halloween choir celebration on Thursday.

Knitting Club Will meet in the 3rd/4th grade room. Our first creations are starting to take shape!

Newspaper Club Our first copy of the year will go out very soon! All those interested in submitting a piece for the art contest please submit entries to the front office.

Philanthropy Club
The Philanthropy Club will be organizing this year’s Thanksgiving Hygiene Drive! Donate bars of soap/combs/toothbrushes/toothpastes/deodorants/shampoos to your class container through November 10. The class with the most donated items wins a pizza party! Let’s fill up those boxes!

Academic Decathlon
Our decathletes have been studying long and hard on Friday’s to prepare for their competition. Let’s keep them in our prayers as they train their brain to think on their toes!

El liderazgo de nuestros estudiantes de la secundaria al buscar un puesto en el consejo estudiantil me ha causado mucha admiración. Dar un discurso no es fácil y mucho menos enfrente de compañeros. Todos hicieron un maravilloso trabajo. Felicidades a todos los que participaron, estoy ansiosamente esperando todas las buenas obras que harán para la escuela.
 
De igual manera el amor y dedicación de los padres al dar su tiempo y recursos para que todos nuestros eventos en la escuela sean un éxito, también me han impresionado. Gracias  a ustedes estudiantes y padres por siempre demostrar una actitud positiva no importa el desafío!

Reunión y eventos para padres con niños en 8
El 18 de oct. tuvimos una reunión exitosa donde hablamos sobre todo lo que hay por venir para nuestros estudiantes en 8. Si ya inscribió a su hijo/a en los cursos de HSPT y le gustaría inscribirlo/a en otra clase hay sesiones en Loyola High School, St. Bernard High School y St. Monica’s. El 26 de octubre de 3:15-4:15 tendremos un día de campamento intensivo para niños en 8 donde hablaremos sobre como solicitar a una escuela preparatoria Católica. El 30 de noviembre tendremos un evento con nuestros alumnos que actualmente asisten a una escuela preparatoria Católica para que compartan sus experiencias con nosotros. Sabemos que todos nuestros estudiantes asistirán a una escuela católica.

Trota-ton/Brinca-ton
Fue tan bonito ver a nuestros estudiantes haciendo ejercicio, nuestros padres donando su tiempo, y todo esto con el fin de ayudar la escuela! Anunciaremos los ganadores de los premios esta semana. Padres su hijo/a trajo a la casa su formulario de patrocinadores que contiene el número de veces que corrió alrededor de la pista, o cuantas veces brincaron si están en preescolar. Los que pagaron un precio fijo, su formulario dice que ya fue pagado por completo. Los demás favor de recaudar fondos y regresar su formulario el miércoles, 26 de octubre para ser elegible para los premios. Sigan buscando patrocinadores y agrégalros a sus formularios. Gracias por su apoyo.

Venta de enchiladas el 28 de octubre
Le faltan ganas para cocinar el viernes? Llévese a la casa unas enchiladas para cenar el 28 de octubre. Por $5 recibira dos enchiladas, arroz, frijoles, ensalada pequeña. Las bebida (horchata y limonada) se venderán a $1. Pasele y recoja una orden para llevar o haga su pedido. Festival de Halloween 31 de octubre
Lunes el 31 de octubre, los estudiantes podrán venir a la escuela en disfraces y disfrutar de nuestro desfile a las 9 am. Después habrán juegos y una comida preparada por nuestras familias. Órdenes para comida y tiquetes ya fueron enviados a casa con su hijo/a. Favor de entregar órdenes de comida el miércoles 26 de octubre. Venta de chocolate
Para completar con su obligación de recaudar fondos para la escuela, cada familia tendrá la oportunidad de vender dos cajas de chocolates. La escuela recibirá 50% de todas las ventas y el que venda más recibirá el premio mayor. Mas detalles están por venir.
 
Venta de garaje
Tiene un garaje lleno de tiliches? Tiene que hacer lugar para todo lo que comprara en la navidad? Dígale a sus amigos y familia que donen sus artículos empezando el 14 de noviembre después de las 3:30 pm. La venta será el 20 de noviembre de 8 am a 1:30 pm. Necesita horas voluntarias? Ocupamos 10 carpas, voluntarios para mover muebles pesados, ayuda al empezar, voluntarios con camionetas para llevar las sobras a goodwill, 4 vendedores de comida (pan dulce, champurrado, café, y mas)
 
Segunda misa familiar y venta de comida, foto con Santa
Acompáñenos a la misa y venta de comida el domingo 4 de diciembre para crecer en nuestra fe, unirse a nuestra comunidad, y tomarse una foto con Santa. Todos están bienvenidos a la misa de 9:00 am en la iglesia de San Sebastián. Después de misa pase a la venta de comida en la cafetería. Niños que vengan en uniforme para la misa de 9 am tendrán el próximo jueves un día sin uniforme.

Inscripciones para el otoño - Open House
El sábado 5 de noviembre a las 10 AM, tendremos nuestra primera Open House del otoño.  Si conoce a familias que están interesadas en la escuela, favor de pedirles que llamen a la escuela 310-473-3337 o que reserven su lugar en el siguiente enlace http://www.saintsebastianschool.com/fall-open-house-2016.html .  Si usted refiere a una familia y se llegan a inscribir, usted será elegible para recibir una reducción en el costo de su registración para el año escolar 2017-18.

Rincón de los deportes
Los equipos de voleibol siguen teniendo una temporada espectacular! El equipo A está 5-3 con la oportunidad de llegar a los semi-finales. Se anunciará el horario el martes. El equipo B sigue adelante con un récord de 2-3 y les quedan tres juegos por jugar. El equipo C ha dominado a sus competidores a veces 5 jugadores contra 6 no han perdido un solo juego su récord es 5-0. Sigan echándole porras a sus espartanos. Inscripciones para basquetbol empezaran pronto. Vamos espartanos!
El rincón de los clubs
Club de español  Este año estamos construyendo un altar, con ofrendas, para el Día de los muertos. Esto es tradicionalmente una celebración mexicana, donde las familias recuerdan a sus seres queridos que han fallecido. Las familias van a los cementerios y preparan la comida favorita del difunto, adornan la zona con caléndulas y calaveras azucaradas. Señorita Gaviña está aceptando fotografías (marcadas con el nombre, apellido y grado del estudiante quien lo esta contribuyendo) y alimentos que no se echen a perder, tales como comida en cajas o latas para el altar. Si usted sabe donde conseguir calaveras de azúcar, o cualquier animal hecho de azúcar, caléndulas, naranjas (o tejocotes en caso que los encuentre), favor de traer estos artículos, ya que tradicionalmente se coloca en el altar.
 
Club de STEM está trabajando en proyectos de ingeniería durante las próximas semanas. Ya hemos construido, puentes, edificios y aviones.
 
Club de Mandarín
Club 1
Se reúne los viernes en la tarde (3:00-4:05 pm)
Nuevos estudiantes al idioma (TK - 2).
Programa:1 canción, 1 libro de lectura, 1 proyecto y 1 una palabra en mandarín escrita cada sesión.
Club 2
Se reúne los viernes en la tarde (4:10-5:10 pm)
Para estudiantes con conocimiento del idioma  (2nd - 8th grade).
Programa: Practicar la conversación, lectura intensiva, destrezas de escritura y comprensión al escuchar.
 
Coro: Los miembros del coro están terminando de practicar su canción de la escuela y pronto nos la presentaran. Para celebrar su trabajo habrá una celebración de Halloween para ellos el jueves.
 
Club de tejer continuará reuniéndose los viernes en el salón de 3rd/4th y sus primeras creaciones están tomando forma.
 
Club del periódico Nuestra primer copia del año saldrá muy pronto. Si gustan participar en el concurso de arte favor de dejar sus dibujos en la oficina de la escuela.
 
Club de filantropía El club este año estará organizando donativos de uso cotidiano para el día de acción de gracias. Participe donando barras de jabón, peines, cepillos y pasta de dientes, y shampoo. Deposítelos en el salón de clase de su hijo/a. La clase con los más donativos ganara una fiesta de pizza. Vamos chicos, a llenar esas cajas de donativos.
 
Decatlón académico
Nuestros miembros han estudiado mucho cada viernes para su competencia. Recemos por ellos mientras entrenan su cerebro para pensar en situaciones bajo presión.

Actualización de comunicaciones
Padres con niños entre 2 - 8 tendrán acceso a Engrade  el sistema en línea que usan los maestros para anotar las calificaciones. Todos deben haber recibido su usuario y contraseña. Si tiene problemas ingresando o necesita ayuda bajando la aplicación Remind favor de acercarse a la oficina de enfrente.
