March E-Letter

Dear Wonderful Parents of St. Sebastian,

During this month and the season of Lent, we come closer to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is in these three actions that we are reminded of what is truly important, loving one another. 

That being said, thank you for the love you show our school! You never stop amazing me with your collaborative spirit and generosity! We kicked off the month of March with more than 30 volunteers at School Improvement Day. Parents and students worked hard to scrub our hallway walls, disinfect toys, and clean classrooms. With a donation of sponges, towels, and disinfectant sprays from parents and 3M we were able to make sure our school continues to shine brightly. A huge thank you to all the parents who gave up four hours of their weekend to clean up the school.

We also continue to anticipate our 41st Annual School Festival themed “One Love.” Planning for an amazingly successful festival is underway. Please join us for meetings, which are on our school calendar. If you can’t make it but would like to get involved in sponsoring a booth or helping us get donations for our silent auction, please contact our Spartan Parent Club at spc@saintsebastianschool.com. A friendly reminder to all families that six hours of your volunteer commitment is completed at the festival. 

Lastly, we would like to recognize the accomplishments of our Academic Decathlon Team who placed 15th overall among 100 plus schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Virtually all of our members walked away with high ranks in each of their individual categories and in the Super Quiz Competition our students scored 4th place. Decathletes, your hard work and effort is an example to us all! For all of these blessings and for those to come, we are truly thankful.

The Lenten Season
We prepare during these 40 days by praying, fasting, and giving alms. Students will be discussing these three themes in depth during religion class, make sure to ask them what they are learning about.

Early registration deadline has passed. Please stop by the front office to sign your Tuition Agreement as soon as possible.
Need Tuition Assistance for 2017-2018?
This year we are NOT using FACTS Online to determine tuition assistance.  If you need tuition assistance you must schedule a meeting with Principal Harty and bring a copy of your 2016 W2s and 1040 tax forms to the office. This process will also help you apply for CEF.

McTeacher’s Night - National Blvd. 11300 March 8th 4-7pm
Come help our school raise money by stopping by for a coffee, sweet treat, indulge in a burger and fries or healthy dinner option like a salad. The school will earn a percentage of sales and the coolest part is that our very own St. Sebastian teachers and staff will be working behind the counter. Who knows they might even be dressed up as the Hamburgler! 

41st Annual School Festival- “One Love” - April 29th and 30th
Planning for our most successful fundraiser of the year is underway, please help us seek donations for our silent auction or for our food sales and help us make this the best festival yet. You can do so by joining our planning meetings mentioned above. 

Parents’ Night Out March 17th
Need an evening without the kids?  Saint Sebastian School’s Parent’s Night Out gives our parents the opportunity to take a well-deserved break.  Go out for a night on the town feeling confident that your little ones are safe and having a great time with their classmates. Or if you’d rather volunteer to watch kids and get hours, even better. We are looking for four volunteers and a Teacher/Administrator to run the event. Register early to secure your spot and get $5.00 off! 1st child is $30 and each additional sibling is $15.Guidelines for participation are: Children must be potty trained, they must be picked up by 10pm or $10/minute fee will apply and payment must be made by personal or cashier’s check (no cash). Science Night April 6th
Our students will be hard at work performing experiments and documenting their process. Join us on April 6th at 5 pm for a gallery walk of science projects at the school and at 5:30 pm the winners of our science fair in grades 3-7 and top three 8th grade projects will present their work. Voting will be done by teachers and we can’t wait to see the hard work and effort that students will be putting into their projects.

Mass and Meal Open House - April 9th
Thank you to those who have made our Open Houses successful. On Sunday, April 9th, from 10AM -2PM Saint Sebastian School will be hosting its third Open House. This Mass will be celebrated at 9 am and it will be bilingual. Breakfast will be sold after mass. If you know any families that might be interested in joining us, please have them call the school to RSVP and invite them to our Mass.  Families that refer a student that enrolls at SaintSebastian will be eligible to receive a reduction in registration fee for the 2017-18 school year.

Father/Daughter Dance March 24th

Spring Sing/Art Walk May 10th

Saint Sebastian Family Camping Trip May 26-29th
We are excited to announce our Annual St. Sebastian Family and Friends camping trip over Memorial Day weekend in 2017. The campground, Jackson Flats, is located  in the Angeles National Forest This is a unique opportunity for our children and families to connect with each other in nature. There is a cost of $40 per person (SSS family members) and $50 for your friends. To make your camping experience easier and more enjoyable, we will be offering an optional meal plan (more details on this will follow). Please sign up in the front office and provide full payment (cash or check). A confirmation email and full details will follow upon receipt of registration. Angelus Newspaper Fundraiser
Saint Sebastian School is participating in Angelus’ Special Parish and School Subscription Offer, which means for every one-year subscription (at the discounted rate of $25 for 44 issues) purchased online, our school will receive $10! This is a great way to support our school and receive the outstanding weekly reporting and commentary of Angelus, the official source of Catholic news for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Great Copy Paper Fundraiser!
Thank you to those of you who donated paper to our school this past month. Please know that you can continue to donate this throughout the year. Remember,  for every ream (500 pages) of paper donated, not only will you receive fundraising credit by bringing in your receipt but you will also receive 15 minutes of volunteer hours.  Thank you!

What’s Going On in Preschool?
Last week preschoolers had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday by reading some of his books and dressing up. For the book "Fox in Socks”, we wore our silly socks and for the story "Wacky Wednesday” we wore our silliest clothes and hair. We even made our very own green eggs and ham. Thank you to all the families for helping out in our celebration. 

This week preschoolers will be focusing on healthy habits. Together we will learn how to make healthy choices in food and for our body.

Estimadas queridas familias de San Sebastián,
 
Durante este mes y la temporada de cuaresma, nos acercamos más a Dios a través de la oración, ayunando, y haciendo actos de caridad. En estas tres acciones recordamos lo que realmente tiene valor, el amor al prójimo.
 
Siguiendo por ese mismo tema, gracias por el amor que le muestran a nuestra escuela. Siempre me sorprenden con su espíritu colaborativo y generosidad. Empezamos el mes de marzo con más de 30 voluntarios en el día de mejoramiento escolar. Padres y estudiantes trabajaron duro para limpiar las paredes de los pasillos, desinfectar juguetes, y limpiar los salones. Con una donación de esponjas, toallas, y espray desinfectantes de pares y de la empresa 3M nos aseguramos que nuestra escuela saliera tan relumbrante que nunca. Mil gracias a los padres que dedicaron cuatro horas de su fin de semana para ayudar.
 
Seguimos anticipando nuestro festival anual que este año cumple 41 años y tendrá el tema “Un Amor” La planificación ya empezó.  Únase a las reuniones del club de padres para encontrar maneras de ayudarnos. Si no puede venir a las reuniones pero quiere tomar parte en patrocinar un puesto o ayudarnos buscando donaciones para nuestra subasta silenciosa favor de comunicarse con el club de padres  spc@saintsebastianschool.com Un recordatorio a todas nuestras familias que seis horas de servicio voluntario deben ser cumplidas en el festival.
 
Por último, reconocemos los logros de nuestros estudiantes en el equipo de “Academic Decathlon.” Tomaron el 15 lugar de más de 100 escuelas en la arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. Casi cada miembro salió premiado con alto rango en su especialidad y en la competencia de Super Quiz nuestros alumnos tomaron 4 lugar. Estos estudiantes son un ejemplo para todos nosotros. Por estas bendiciones y por todas las que están por venir, damos gracias.

 La cuaresma
Durante estos cuarenta días rezamos, ayunamos, and hacemos actos caritativos. En las clases de religión los estudiantes estarán explorando estos temas mas a fondo. No se les olvide preguntarles sobre todo lo que están aprendiendo.

Estudiantes actuales
La fecha límite para registración temprana ya pasó. Pase a la oficina de la escuela lo  más pronto posible para firmar su contrato de colegiatura.
Necesita ayuda financiera para el año escolar 2017-2018?
Este año próximo no estaremos usando FACTS para determinar cuanta ayuda le podremos ofrecer. Si necesita asistencia favor de hacer una cita y  traer una copia de sus impuestos del 2016 y formulario 1040 a la oficina. Este proceso también le ayudará llenar su solicitud de CEF.

Noche McTeacher’s - National Blvd. 11300 - 8 de marzo 4-7pm
Venga a tomarse un café, comer un postre, una hamburguesa y papitas, o una opción más saludable como una ensalada. La escuela recibirá un porcentaje de las ventas y esto nos ayudará a recaudar fondos. ¡Lo mejor de todo es que nuestros propios maestros están trabajando en la cocina y hasta podrían estar disfrazados del personaje el hamburgler! 

El 41 festival escolar - “One Love”
La planificación para nuestro evento escolar más exitoso ya está en proceso, ayúdenos a buscar donaciones para nuestra subasta silenciosa o para nuestras ventas de comida y ayúdenos a hacer que este festival sea más exitoso que nunca. Únase a nuestra reuniones, las fechas están mencionadas arriba.
 
Noche de padres - 17 de marzo 
¿Necesita una noche sin niños? El evento Noche de padres les da la oportunidad de tomar un merecido descanso. Salga a disfrutar una noche con su pareja con la confianza de que sus chiquitos están seguros y divirtiéndose con sus compañeros. O también podría ayudar en el evento y hacer horas voluntarias. Buscamos a cuatro voluntarios y un maestro/director para estar presente durante el evento. Regístrese temprano, antes del 8 de marzo para asegurar su cupo y aproveche el descuento de $5. Registrar a un niño es $30 y por cada niño adicional es $15. Para participar: Niños deben saber usar el baño solitos, pasar por ellos a las 10 pm o se les cobrará $10 por cada minuto que llegan tarde. Noche de ciencia 6 de abril
Nuestros estudiantes están trabajando duro para completar sus experimentos y documentar el proceso. Venga el 6 de abril a las 5 pm para observar los proyectos de ciencia y a las 5:30 pm a escuchar una presentación de nuestros ganadores de nuestra feria de ciencia en los grados 3-7 y los 3 ganadores de 8  at 5 pm. Los maestros evaluaran el trabajo de los niños y estamos ansiosos por ver el esfuerzo que le darán al completar su propio trabajo. 
 
Picnic de doble inmersión, 10 de junio
¿Quiere conocer a otras familias en Los Angeles que tienen a sus hijos en programas Católicos de doble inmersión en la arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles? Venga a un picnic donde habrá presentaciones, comida, juegos y mucha diversión. Acompáñenos en este evento familiar. Mas informacion está por venir.  

“Open house” y  misa familiar con comida
Gracias a todas las familias que hicieron posible el Open House pasado. El domingo 9 de abril de 10 AM a 2pm, tendremos nuestra tercera “Open House.”  Si conoce a familias que están interesadas en la escuela, invítelos a la misa y favor de pedirles que llamen a la escuela 310-473-3337 o visiten nuestro sitio web para que reserven su lugar. Esta misa será a las a las 9am  y será bilingüe. Si usted refiere a una familia y se llegan a inscribir, usted será elegible para recibir una reducción en el costo de su registración para el año escolar 2017-18. Habrá venta de comida después de la misa.

Dia de campamento familiar de San Sebastián 26-29 de marzo
Estamos contentos de anunciar nuestro dia de campamento anual de San Sebastián durante el fin de semana feriado de “Memorial Day”. El campamento, Jackson Flats, está localizado en el bosque nacional Angeles. Esta es una oportunidad única para nuestros hijos y familiares de conectarnos más a la madre naturalez y cada uno. Hay un costo de  $40 por persona (famila de la escuela) y $50 por amigos. Para hacer su experiencia mejor y más placentera, se ofrecerá un plan de comida (se les dará más detalles sobre esto después). Favor de apuntarse en la oficina y de proveer pago completo (efectivo o cheque). Les llegara un correo electrónico confirmando su asistencia y más detalles tan pronto como se inscriban. Noticias de la preescolar 
La semana pasada los estudiantes la pasaron bien cuando celebraron el cumpleanios de Dr. Seuss's. Cuando leyeron "Fox in Socks”, se pusieron calcetines locos y para el cuento "Wacky Wednesday” nos peinamos y vestimos raros. También cocinamos huevos verdes con jamon. Gracias a todas las familias que nos ayudaron.
