December E-Letter

Dear Parents of St. Sebastian School,

Advent blessings to you all as we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. During this time of anticipation and joy we remind ourselves that the gifts that matter the most are those that can’t be purchased. I challenge us all over the Christmas break to relish in the gifts that we all share as Christians, faith, hope and love. These are what truly matter.

May you and your family enjoy the extra time together during the Christmas vacation and may God grant us all time to relax and reflect on all the blessings we have.

Our hearts and prayers continue to be with those impacted by the recent fires. Archbishop José H. Gomez asks all people of faith and good-will to join him in offering prayers and support for all our brothers and sisters affected by the wildfires in Ventura, Santa Barbara and LA Counties. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is providing support to the communities affected by the fires through Catholic Charities of Los Angeles and our local parishes and schools. A special fund has been established to help those impacted by the fires. Donations can be made at www.archla.org/fires.

God bless,

Sra. Harty

Our Lady of Guadalupe 12/12 at 8am
On Tuesday Dec. 12th we celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This day we celebrate that Mary appeared in the form of an indigenous woman to a poor and humble man named Juan Diego. He has since been named a saint and both him and Our Lady form a huge part of our Catholic Hispanic Heritage. On Tuesday. Dec. 12th at 8:15 am we will have a special play presented in place of morning assembly by our 3rd and 4th graders. Students will gather, as we always do, and place backpacks in their classrooms. Then all will meet in the cafeteria to watch a brief play. Parents are welcome to join us.

Las Posadas 12/15 10 am
Nine days before Christmas in Mexico and in other Spanish speaking countries they celebrate the coming of Jesus by reenacting Mary and Joseph asking for a place to stay on their way to Bethlehem. They do this by singing a traditional song that is sung as they go door to door in their neighborhood until they are finally given a place to stay. At this house they then are offered a meal and break a pinata. The traditional piñata has seven horns representing the seven deadly sins. The stick used to break it represents the struggle between good and evil, and the candies that fall down are the grace God gives us to not sin again. At school we will celebrate a posada on the Wednesday  Dec. 15th from 10-11am. We are looking for three pinatas to be donated, a stick and candy for each.
