Dear Parents of St. Sebastian School,
Advent blessings to you all as we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. During this time of anticipation and joy we remind ourselves that the gifts that matter the most are those that can’t be purchased. I challenge us all over the Christmas break to relish in the gifts that we all share as Christians, faith, hope and love. These are what truly matter. Our Lady of Guadalupe On Mon. Dec. 12th we celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This day we celebrate that Mary appeared in the form of an indigenous woman to a poor and humble man named Juan Diego. He has since been named a saint and both him and Our Lady form a huge part of our Catholic Hispanic Heritage. On Mon. Dec. 12th at our Parish we will have “mananitas” to honor her at 5 am, chapurado and pan dulce to follow. Mass with mariachi will be at 6 am and 7pm. Dinner and raffle will follow at 8pm. All are invited! Las Posadas Nine days before Christmas in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries they celebrate the coming of Jesus by reenacting Mary and Joseph asking for a place to stay on their way to Bethlehem. They do this by singing a traditional song that it sung as they go door to door in their neighborhood until they are finally given a place to stay. At this house they then are offered a meal and break a pinata. The traditional pinata has seven horns representing the seven deadly sins. The stick one uses to break it represents the struggle between good and evil, and the candies that fall down are the grace God gives us to not sin again. At school we will celebrate a posada on the Fri. Dec. 16th from 10-11am and as a church and school we will co-host one on Mon. Dec. the 19th. Christmas Concert and Dinner on Dec. 14th. It is our pleasure to invite you to our annual Christmas Concert and Dinner on Dec. 14th. A grilled cheese/grilled cheese & turkey sandwich, tomato soup dinner, and drink for $5 will be served from 5-6pm and the Christmas Concert will begin at 6:30pm. Please let us know if you will be attending the concert with a plus one or more guests, and if you would like to purchase dinner before hand in the school cafeteria. If you know any families that might be interested in joining us, please have them call the school to RSVP and invite them to our Mass. This Mass will be celebrated at 12pm and it will be bilingual. Families that refer a student that enrolls at Saint Sebastian will be eligible to receive a reduction in registration fee for the 2017-18 school year. Instead of a meal this day we’ll be offering light refreshments. National Catholic Schools Week From Jan. 29th - Feb. 4th our Nation celebrates Catholic schools. Each day we will highlight an aspect of our school that makes us who we are. On Sunday we’ll kick off with an Open House Family Mass and Meal to celebrate our parish. Monday is community day so we will volunteer in our community. Tuesday we celebrate our students. Wednesday we celebrate our Nation by honoring the different countries our families come from at our international potluck lunch. Thursday we celebrate vocations and so we’ll have a career day. Friday we celebrate our faculty, staff and teachers and organize a breakfast for them. School Improvement Day School improvement day has been moved to March 4th from 9am to 1pm. Dad’s Club would like to invite you all (that includes dads), to help clean, fix, and improve our kids school even further. In addition, we’d like to plan a BBQ or a pot-luck for everyone to enjoy a nice lunch and get to know each other better. We’re open for suggestions! If anyone has any special talents such as gardening/landscaping, technician, etc., please let us know. Chocolate Sale Don’t forget to submit money for chocolates as soon as possible if you haven’t done so. Thank you all for your support St. Sebastian Sports With winter comes the basketball season! This year, we will have a C girls basketball team. Practice will begin when we get back from break and games begin at the end of January. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe El lunes 12 de dic. celebramos a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Este día celebramos que María se le apareció en forma de una mujer indígena a Juan Diego un hombre pobre y humilde. Él ha sido nombrado santo y tanto él como ella forman una gran parte de nuestra herencia hispana católica. El lunes 12 de dic. en nuestra parroquia tendremos mañanitas a las 5 am, chapurrado y pan dulce se servirán después. Misa con mariachi será a las 6 am y 7pm. Cena y rifa seguirán a las 8pm. Todos están bienvenidos. Las Posadas En México y otros países hispanohablantes, nueve días antes de navidad se celebra la llegada del niño Jesús a través de una pequeña obra acompañada por un canto tradicional y una fiesta. Esto se hace en un barrio donde la gente va pasando de casa en casa hasta que una finalmente les da hospedaje. En la canción vivimos la larga jornada que José y María pasaron en camino a Belén donde iba casa por casa pidiendo un lugar donde pasar la noche. Finalmente llegan y ahí es donde se come y hay piñata. La piñata tradicional tiene siete cuernos estos representan los siete pecados mortales. El palo para quebrar la significa la batalla entre el bien y el mal. Los dulces que caen representan la gracia que Dios nos da para arrepentirnos y no pecar más. En la escuela celebraremos una posada el viernes 16 de dic. De 10 a 11 am. El 19 de dic. celebraremos una posada junto con la parroquia. Concierto navideño y cena 14 de diciembre Usted está cordialmente invitado a nuestro concierto navideño y cena anual el 14 de diciembre. La cena será de $5 el platillo por un sándwich de queso/sándwich de pavo con queso a la parrilla, sopa de tomate, y una bebida de 5-6pm y el concierto empezará a las 6:30pm. Déjenos saber si estará asistiendo el concierto con un invitado o con un grupo, y si nos acompañará para cenar en la cafetería de la escuela. El domingo empezaremos con una Open House y misa familiar con comida para celebrar a nuestra parroquia. Lunes es día de comunidad así que haremos voluntariado en nuestra comunidad. El martes celebramos nuestros estudiantes, y miércoles a nuestra nación con un convivio de comidas internacionales para reconocer nuestras familias que vienen de distintos países. Jueves celebraremos las vocaciones y tendremos un día donde vendrán a hablar profesionales con nosotros. El viernes haremos un desayuno de apreciación para los maestros y el personal de la escuela. Día de mejoramiento escolar La fecha ha cambiado, ahora será sábado 4 de marzo de 9am a 1pm. Al Club de Papás les gustaría invitarlos a todos (incluyendo a los papás) a limpiar, arreglar, y mejorar la escuela de nuestros niños. También nos gustaría organizar una parrillada o convivio para que todos disfruten de un rico almuerzo y tomemos tiempo para conocernos un poco más. Si tiene sugerencias háganoslas saber. Si algunos de ustedes tienen talentos especiales como jardinería/landscaping, o son técnicos etc., déjenoslo saber. Venta de chocolate No se les olvide entregar dinero de chocolates lo mas pronto posible. Gracias por su apoyo. Deportes Con el invierno viene la temporada de básquetbol. Este año tendremos el quipo C de niñas. Práctica comenzará después de las vacaciones y los juegos serán al final de enero. Estamos buscando a padres voluntarios para ser entrenadores. Saint Sebastian School provides academic excellence in a private, Catholic, multilingual setting in order to prepare students to serve as faith-filled disciples in our global community. We are West Los Angeles' Dual Language Immersion Catholic School with the goal for our students to master academic subjects while becoming fluent in both Spanish and English. Since 1950, Saint Sebastian School has educated students in Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Elementary and Middle School.
