Dear Wonderful Parents of St. Sebastian,
It is hard to believe that the school year will be ending Friday June 16th! It has been an incredible year and I know next year will be filled with even greater success. Congratulations class of 2017. Know that St. Sebastian School will always be your home. Each of you have a bright light, let it shine far beyond this school. Our students will be attending St. Monica, Notre Dame Academy, Bishop Conaty, University High, and the Geffen Academy @ UCLA. Please join us at mass on Fri June 9th at 8am as we say farewell to our graduating class. The following week we will be celebrating the successes of our TK scholars. They will share their growth as they complete their first year of dual language immersion, great job TK! TK parents are invited to join them on Tues June 13th at 8am for their language celebration. Our preschoolers will also be celebrating their growth and we will celebrate their accomplishments June 15th. There will be a Preschool session open to families from July 3-28th. If you are interested or know someone who is, please come by the office before the last day of school to enroll To the rest of the St. Sebastian scholars- You have much to be proud of! Please continue to stay academically focused as you enjoy time with your families. Don’t forget to pick up a book and practice your math skills; keeping a journal of what you do over the summer isn’t such a bad idea either. Some important information regarding last week of school: ● On Tues. June 13 and Weds June 14th Ms. Zuniga will be hosting the used uniform sale. Please stop by after school. ● Thurs. June 15th is a full day of school, aftercare is provided. ● Fri. June 16th- mass at 8am. Awards immediately following mass. There will be a pancake breakfast for all students will lunch will not be provided. Please note that aftercare will not be provided. Students will receive their report card, STAR scores, summer reading list, and school supplies on the last day of school. The school office will be open on Monday June 19th from 8am-3pm. Please be sure to resolve any unpaid tuition or registration fees during this time. Please note that Mr. Higdon will be away from June 19-23. Mrs. Harty will also be back in school starting July 3rd. The children had a blast and created unforgettable memories! 2nd Grade First Holy Communion Mr. Suk’s second grade class has been preparing to receive the Eucharist! During this special time, we ask that you please keep them in your prayers as they take another step to grow closer to Jesus. Their First Holy Communion will take place on Sunday June 11 at the 9am mass. There will be a light breakfast immediately following mass in the school cafeteria. Student Council is hosting a Dance! Summer Tutoring with Reading Specialist Sherona Khorramian We will not be having summer school. If you would like your child to continue building reading fluency and skills, consider hiring a Ms. Sherona for one to one tutoring throughout the summer. During the spring season we have witnessed God’s unbelievable wonder! On April 1 our community welcomed a new member, Mr. Amon Guillermo Harty! Our hearts were filled with joy for Mrs. Harty and her husband and she entered one of God’s most precious gifts, parenthood. Baby Amon helped us welcome the most important mysteries of our faith, Easter! Although it seems long ago, I hope you all were able to delight yourselves in the power of the Resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. Throughout the month of April we ALL worked together to bring to life an incredibly successful school festival. Thank you to every committee member, parent, student, teacher, sponsor, donor, and visitor that joined us on our special weekend. I am very proud to have been able to lead our community to witness such successes. The One Love Festival raised approximately over $33,000. This would not have been possible without every fundraiser, donation, and your time. Thank you all for your willingness to work together in efforts to raise as much as we have. That being said, thank you for the love you show our school! You never stop amazing me with your collaborative spirit and generosity! As we approach the last five weeks of school we look forward to our last student achievement testing (STAR Tests), the Annual Camping Trip, our 2nd graders receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist, and the graduation of our beloved 8th grade class. Families who are participating in the camping trip will drive up to Jackson Flats Campground at their convenience. They will be enjoying the amazing presence of God through nature, engage in hiking, biking, fishing, swimming and canoeing at nearby Jackson Lake. During this month and the season of Lent, we come closer to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is in these three actions that we are reminded of what is truly important, loving one another. That being said, thank you for the love you show our school! You never stop amazing me with your collaborative spirit and generosity! We kicked off the month of March with more than 30 volunteers at School Improvement Day. Parents and students worked hard to scrub our hallway walls, disinfect toys, and clean classrooms. With a donation of sponges, towels, and disinfectant sprays from parents and 3M we were able to make sure our school continues to shine brightly. A huge thank you to all the parents who gave up four hours of their weekend to clean up the school. We also continue to anticipate our 41st Annual School Festival themed “One Love.” Planning for an amazingly successful festival is underway. Please join us for meetings, which are on our school calendar. Science Night April 6th Our students will be hard at work performing experiments and documenting their process. What’s Going On in Preschool? Last week preschoolers had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday by reading some of his books and dressing up. For the book "Fox in Socks”, we wore our silly socks and for the story "Wacky Wednesday” we wore our silliest clothes and hair. We even made our very own green eggs and ham. Thank you to all the families for helping out in our celebration. This week preschoolers will be focusing on healthy habits. A big thank you to all parents who helped make January successful. Our open house brought in 26 interested candidates and we all enjoyed the events of Catholic Schools Week thanks to you! During this month, we look ahead at our Liturgical Church Calendar and see that the season of Lent is approaching (March 1st). As faith-filled people we recognize that at different times in our lives we must renew our hearts and return our focus to what truly matters, loving one another. In Lent we remember to pray, fast, and give alms. It is in these three actions that we are reminded of what is important. Recesses will remain the same length, but have been moved to improve student learning. Also our K and 1st grade classes have switched languages for the morning. 1st grade will now have Spanish in the morning and K will now have English in the morning. Uniforms Now that we’ve made it through the first half of the year all students should have their full P.E., church, and normal school uniform. Notices will go home if students are not in correct uniform. Please remember that non - St. Sebastian sweatshirts, jackets, and sweaters can be worn outside not inside. Undershirts and shorts should not be longer than the shirt sleeves or skirts worn, and can only be visible at the collarbone. Socks should be higher than the ankle, no ankle socks. Girls should wear white, navy, black, or grey solid color pantyhose not leggings or tights under uniform. Boys 1st grade and older must wear belts and shirts tucked in. For the church uniform, please remember your tie (boys and girls) and your sweater vest or button up sweater. Shoes should be solid black or blue, on P.E. days they can be mostly black due to athletic support needed. Lastly length of shorts for boys should be at the knee and girls jumpers and skirts should be no shorter than four fingers above the knee. Please see the school handbook for more details. Farewell and Welcome Ms. Brenna our aftercare teacher has found a full time position, we are happy for this wonderful opportunity that has come her way. We will miss her here, but welcome Ms. Elise who will work with our TK-2nd graders M-F from 3-6pm. We also welcome our school Counselor Ms. Sarah Listas. Please read her brief bio: Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York I am a true Brooklyn woman at heart. I completed my undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Women’s Studies from Hunter College, CUNY and went on to study Social Work at Hunter College School of Social Work. I moved to Los Angeles a little over a year ago, to achieve a lifelong dream of living by the ocean and on the West Coast. When I am not working, I enjoy hiking and playing with my rescue dog Miss Fox. I love working with and helping people. My true passion in life is to make a difference in the lives of young people. I am so excited to be a part of the St. Sebastian School team! St. Sebastian Feast Day Mass and Potluck Saint Sebastian was a man who stood up to people who persecuted him for his faith. Although shot multiple times by arrows he survived only later to experience death due to his beliefs. Today he is known as the patron saint of athletes and soldiers. On Jan. 20th, the church and school will celebrate him with a trilingual mass (Spanish, French, and English) at 6:30 pm and a community potluck to follow. McTeacher’s Night On Jan. 25th come help our school raise money by stopping by for a coffee, sweet treat, indulge in a burger and fries or healthy dinner option like a salad. The school will earn a percentage of sales and the coolest part is that our very own St. Sebastian teachers and staff will be working behind the counter. Who knows they might even be dressed up as the hamburgler! Location and time TBD. Bring a Friend to School Day On Friday January 27th, we are inviting students and families to bring a friend to Saint Sebastian for a day. We want to share the great experiences at Saint Sebastian School and bring in more families to our community. More information will go out from the admissions office this week. Mass and Meal Open House On Sunday, January 29th at 10AM, Saint Sebastian School will kick off Catholic Schools Week by hosting its second Open House. If you know any families that might be interested in joining us, please have them call the school to RSVP and invite them to our Mass. This Mass will be celebrated at 12 pm and it will be bilingual. Los calcetines deben cubrir el tobillo, no se permiten calcetines más cortos. Niñas deben usar pantimedias de color sólido, blanco, azul marino, negras, o grises. No pueden ser “tights” o “leggings.” Niños de primero en adelante deben usar cinto y la camisa debe ir siempre bien fajada. Para el uniforme de la iglesia, favor de recordar la corbata (niños y niñas) al igual que el chaleco o suéter. Our Lady of Guadalupe On Mon. Dec. 12th we celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This day we celebrate that Mary appeared in the form of an indigenous woman to a poor and humble man named Juan Diego. He has since been named a saint and both him and Our Lady form a huge part of our Catholic Hispanic Heritage. On Mon. Dec. 12th at our Parish we will have “mananitas” to honor her at 5 am, chapurado and pan dulce to follow. Mass with mariachi will be at 6 am and 7pm. Dinner and raffle will follow at 8pm. All are invited! Las Posadas Nine days before Christmas in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries they celebrate the coming of Jesus by reenacting Mary and Joseph asking for a place to stay on their way to Bethlehem. They do this by singing a traditional song that it sung as they go door to door in their neighborhood until they are finally given a place to stay. At this house they then are offered a meal and break a pinata. The traditional pinata has seven horns representing the seven deadly sins. The stick one uses to break it represents the struggle between good and evil, and the candies that fall down are the grace God gives us to not sin again. At school we will celebrate a posada on the Fri. Dec. 16th from 10-11am and as a church and school we will co-host one on Mon. Dec. the 19th. Christmas Concert and Dinner on Dec. 14th. Las Posadas En México y otros países hispanohablantes, nueve días antes de navidad se celebra la llegada del niño Jesús a través de una pequeña obra acompañada por un canto tradicional y una fiesta. Esto se hace en un barrio donde la gente va pasando de casa en casa hasta que una finalmente les da hospedaje. En la canción vivimos la larga jornada que José y María pasaron en camino a Belén donde iba casa por casa pidiendo un lugar donde pasar la noche. Finalmente llegan y ahí es donde se come y hay piñata. La piñata tradicional tiene siete cuernos estos representan los siete pecados mortales. El palo para quebrar la significa la batalla entre el bien y el mal. Los dulces que caen representan la gracia que Dios nos da para arrepentirnos y no pecar más. En la escuela celebraremos una posada el viernes 16 de dic. De 10 a 11 am. El 19 de dic. celebraremos una posada junto con la parroquia. I have been extremely impressed by the leadership our middle school students have shown as they campaigned for a position on student council. The 26th of Oct. from 3:15-4:15 we will have a high school application boot camp where we’ll be going through important pieces of the application process with students.. Club Corner Spanish Club The school will be building our school altar for El Día de Los Muertos. This is traditionally a Mexican celebration where families remember loved ones that have passed away. The families go to the gravesites and prepare the deceased’s favorite meal, adorn the area with sugared skulls and marigolds. Senorita Gaviña is accepting photographs (labeled with the first and last name and grade of student contributing) and non perishable foods, such as food in boxes or cans for the altar. If you are able to find sugar skulls, or any animals made of sugar, marigolds, oranges (or tejocotes if you find them), please bring these items as they are traditionally placed on the altar as well. STEM Club is working on Engineering projects for the next couple of weeks. We have already built, bridges, buildings and planes. Mandarin Club 1 Meets Friday afternoon (3:00-4:05pm). Las familias van a los cementerios y preparan la comida favorita del difunto, adornan la zona con caléndulas y calaveras azucaradas. My heart is overflowing with joy as I look back on these two weeks of school and set my eyes on the third week. The teachers and I have enjoyed every minute of our time on campus with your children. We were also delighted to see so many of you attend Back to School Night where we got to share a little bit about ourselves as educators and what our expectations are for this school year. A big thank you to all the parents, teachers, staff members that worked tirelessly to set up, clean up, and make the evening such a special night! This week in a very special way we remember all those who suffered from the attacks on September 11th. We ask God to help us remember that loving actions always prevail. In order to do this let us challenge ourselves to do one good deed a day for someone else this week. Below are some important updates: Friday Mass On Friday our students will be putting away their backpacks at 7:45 am and teachers will be walking to church with their students by 7:55 am. If you should happen to arrive after this time please make sure your son/daughter is accompanied to the school by an adult. We can’t wait for them to help us plan our Latino Heritage events at our school STEM Club This is the first year of our STEM club and we look forward to hearing all of the great ideas they’ll be digging into with Srta. Rodriguez. Mandarin Club Will begin on September 23rd. 3:15-4:05 and 4:10-5:00 pm Student Council Student Council will meet on Tuesday’s at lunch in Room 8 to plan fun student activities and events throughout the year. Choir Will have their first performance this 18th of September at our Family Mass. Knitting Club Ms. Thompson can’t wait to see you on Friday. Philanthropy Club This club will meet on Thursdays and we can’t wait to hear about all of the good deeds they will do. Academic Decathlon The Academic Junior High Decathlon is a competition for students in sixth through eighth grade that comprises of ten events: two collaborative team efforts and eight individual subject tests. Students meet on Friday afternoons and spend months studying logic, Roman Catholic doctrine, English, Literature, Science, Mathematics, Current Events, Social Studies, and Fine Arts in order to prepare for the Archdiocesan wide competition in March. Communications Update 2nd - 8th grade parents will have access to Engrade the online system teachers use for grades. You should be receiving your logins this week. If you have trouble signing on or need help downloading Remind for mass communicate via email and/or text, please come to the front office. Tuition Tuition is due on the 5th or 20th of the month. Our St. Sebastian Family is Growing! This year we will be welcoming two new teachers to our St. Sebastian Family and inviting current teachers to take new roles. Ms. Sabol, enthusiastically accepted the move to our very own St. Sebastian middle school to replace Ms. Knox. Ms. Rivera, a seasoned teacher with experience in K-8th, will be the 3/4 grade teacher, and as a graduate from Remick Leadership Program at the University of Notre Dame, with a Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership will also serve as Vice Principal. Ms. Littleworth, who was with us part time will be joining us full time as our art, music, choir, P.E. teacher, and all school mass cantor.
