Friday Letter 10/23/15

Dear St. Sebastian Families,

Next week we will be meeting with parents for Parent Teacher Conferences.  Monday will be an early release day so that teachers have ample time to meet with families.  There will be care provided until 4 pm and after care until 6pm.  If you have not scheduled a time to meet with your student’s teacher, please make sure that you secure a time to meet.  Preschool students will have a regular school day.

Included in today’s letter is information about the upcoming Spartan newspaper!  Sam Tilles, Devon Martinez and Wyatt Lewis will be meeting with interested students on Mondays after school.  The first official meeting will be on Nov. 2nd at 4:00pm.

I wanted to thank Natalie C., Natalie L., Sydney H. and Penny T. for their help with the Open House.  They were awesome and definitely made an impression on our visitors.  We were very proud of our student representatives.

Update on the cafeteria:  The cafeteria walls are being prepared to be painted.  Floor tiles have been delivered so next week is a big week for possible completion.  Keep your fingers crossed and prayers continued for a safe and eventless work week.

Please note that next week we will be celebrating mass on Thursday instead of Friday.  Please have your student in their chapel uniform on Thursday.  They will not need to bring PE clothes to change.  We will have a “relaxed” PE class that day.

SPC: Our next big event is the Halloween Festival.  Volunteer spot opportunities have been sent via email, so please sign up to help.  Families will only receive credit for hours worked if they have signed up prior to the event.  Thank you for your help with this.

Dear St. Sebastian Families,

Thank you to all who were able to attend and help out at the church yard sale. It was an exceptionally hot day but filled with the cool spirit of our St. Sebastian community.  Fr. German had prepared food and refreshments along with many other families.  I loved seeing some of our graduate families and students, a reminder that once your a Spartan, your always a Spartan.

Tomorrow, Oct. 17th we will be opening our doors to the community for our first open house.  Yes, families are already looking for schools for the 2016 school year.  Remember to spread the good news about St. Sebastian school, we love referrals.

Update on the cafeteria: Today we received the ok to start work on the kitchen and cafeteria.  The kitchen will be cleaned out for renovation first, followed by the cafeteria.  I will let you know what the expected completion date is once it has been established.

SPC meeting update: On Tuesday the Spartan Parent Club met to discuss upcoming events.  Look for invitations to volunteer at our Halloween Festival, and valet drop off in the mornings.  Planning for the upcoming Chocolate Sale was also on the agenda.  More information will be going out as we get closer to the Nov. 22nd.  This is a great fundraiser for the school, so everyone’s help is greatly appreciated.

Our first after school food sale was a great success.  Thank you to our ASFST (afterschool food sale team) for all your hard work.  Can’t wait until next month!

Dear St. Sebastian Families,

On Oct. 11th from 8am- 2pm, the church will be having their annual yard sale.  If you have any items that you would like to donate, please contact the church at 310-478-0136.

As a reminder, parents or guardians picking up students prior to dismissal time will need to email the teacher as well as the front office or principal.  Early notification allows teachers time to give iformation to students, have the student ready for pick up in the front office and create less of a distraction to other students in class.  Please do not go to the classroom to pick up your student.

On Saturday, Oct. 17th we will be opening our doors to the community for our first open house this school year.  We will need help from parents and students.  Please look for an invitation to volunteer coming out this week.  Students will be invited by their teachers.  If your student is scheduled to attend, they will need to wear their uniform.  Students helping with this event will have free dress on Monday.

Update on the cafeteria:  For the most part, the demolition stage of the cafeteria has been completed.  There has been a thorough analyses of any trace of mold or water contamination of any kind.  That said, we will be a bit behind schedule for our original completion date.  We hope to begin reconstruction some time next week.  Fortunately, we continue to have good weather conditions, so students are enjoying the time spent outside.

Our first after school food sale is on Friday, Oct. 16th.  Families will be preparing hamburgers and snacks for purchase, so send you child to school with some extra money safely stowed away in their back pack.

Dear St. Sebastian Families,

This week I spoke to students about bringing personal items from home (toys, games,,,).  Some items have gone missing; this has created unsettling feelings amongst students.  Please help your child understand the importance of following school rules and being respectful of the property of others.  Returning misplaced items is a fundamental and necessary moral lesson for our children.  It is important that a level of trust exists in our school/church family.  Thank you for your support.

On Oct. 11th the church will be having their annual yard sale.  If you have any items that you would like to donate, please contact the church at 310-478-0136. Please drop by or donate gently used items.  If you have any questions, please call 310-478-0136.

This week families went to Shakey’s Pizza for Pizza Night.  Everyone had a wonderful time with family and friends.  This event helped raise money for the school and continues to be a great community builder.  Thank you families for supporting this event!

This Sunday we will be celebrating the Feast of St. Francis at the 9:00AM mass together and joining in a blessing of the animals.  Please plan on attending with your student(s) and pet(s) (if appropriate).  Students will need to wear their school uniforms at mass.  All students who attend in uniform may have free dress on Mon., Oct. 5th.

Starting Friday, Oct. 9th, all students in grades 4- 8 who are not in academic decathlon or choir, will be participating in our poetry/ songwriting class with Brandon Bjornson. Brandon worked with our students last year after school.  Here is a reintroduction:

My name is Brandon Lee Björnson and I am 17, in the 12th grade at Wildwood.
I am a musician, songwriter and singer, filmmaker, photographer and poet!

As some of you may know, I taught a poetry and songwriting class at St. Sebastian school last year. I enjoyed seeing and getting to know you all so much that I want to do it again!

I hope to see you all on Oct. 9th!
