Jog-a-Thon 2015 is coming up Tuesday May 26. We still need volunteers for this event. A sign up is posted on the SPC board. If you are short on volunteer hours for the year this event is for you! Please come to lend a helping hand!
Don’t forget to get bring in your sponsor sheet…make money per lap or donate a lump sum. Students who bring in $40 worth of sponsorship will get free dress plus a Spartan T Shirt that you can wear at PE this year and next. The grand prize for the student with the most money raised is a 2 day pass to Knotts Berry Soak City. The class with the most money raised will get a pizza party. Any class that has 100% participation will get extra recess time. The PK through 5 student who runs the most laps will get a soccer ball, and the middle schooler who runs the most laps will get a volleyball. It will be the most productive calories you ever lose. This weekend Mr. Suk and a team of volunteers will be working on moving the classrooms around as we create a new Saint Sebastian School. One of the Dual Language Immersion Classrooms will be moved to room 4 (currently Mandarin). Mandarin will be moving to room 7. Our new "Center for Arts and Music” will be relocated to the “Red Barn” On June 12th we will have an award ceremony for the elementary school. Grades 1 through 7 will stay after mass to recognize student acheivement. All are welcome to attend. Today St. Sebastian students made their first reconciliation after the 8am mass. The children were very excited and happy, before and after the sacrament. Thank you Fr. German and Sr. Rosa for preparing a beautiful, reflective atmosphere for this special sacrament.
Families that will be attending the camping trip next weekend have the option of picking up their children at 12pm. Please do not pick students up earlier than 12pm as it is disruptive to the class. Students staying at school will have an afternoon of fun playground games with teachers and staff. If you are interested in having your child attend summer school, please submit your application so that we can plan on their attendance. Applications were sent home but can also be found on our web site at www.saintsebastianschool.com. On June 12th we will have an award ceremony for the elementary school. The teachers enjoyed a nice lunch on Monday, along with many cards, pictures and flowers. Thank you Mrs. Herrera for putting vases in all the classrooms, our teachers truly felt loved and appreciated this week.
We are continuing to conduct tours at the school. With our new program starting next year, there are many 3, 4, and 5 year olds joining our St. Sebastian School community. There are also a number of students that will be starting in grades 1- 8 next year. Please make sure that you have submitted necessary forms to re-enroll. Contracts will be going home next week for families applying for tuition reduction. Please submit your summer school applications for 2015. My Mom Rocks mother-son night later today, May 8th. We know it’s going to be a rockin’ time! Ms. Weiss K – 3rd grade will being going to the VA for a emergency preparedness day on May 13. We need Virtus certified parents to volunteer Ms. B 2 – 3rd grade will being going to the Skirball Cultural Center for a field trip on May 12. This morning we recognized all of the volunteers that spent countless hours planning, organizing and working our carnival. Fr. German led us in a special blessing for the many who continually share their time and talent with our school community. The hard work of our families produced memories for a lifetime. Thank you, thank you for all your hard work and dedication. This year’s carnival profited $23,000. The proceeds from this fundraiser/community builder will be supporting the ongoing operational costs of the school as well as subsidizing tuition for families who are qualified. Sunday I will be going to “The Bilinguel Education Fair” at UCLA. There will be workshops and an opportunity for families to find out more about St. Sebastian School. The workshop and school showcase will run from 9am- 5pm. All are welcome! Last week the archdiocese met with the Fr. German, the church staff, Sr. Rosa, Sr. Anne Ms. Sabol and myself. The agenda was on Virtus and our safety program for the children. If you have not completed your Virtus certification there will be two offerings coming up in May. Please understand that in order for the St. Sebastian Church/School community to be in compliance, all school employees and volunteers must have this certification. This is a requirement for all Catholic Schools and Churches. Parent volunteers that do not have their certification will not be permitted to chaperone or volunteer on campus when children are in school. Dates for Virtus training are: Thursday, May 21st in Spanish,and Saturday, May 30th in English. Your understanding and support is greatly appreciated. Ms. Weiss “My Mom Rocks” mother son night will be filled with games, contests, and fun! The first 25 people to purchase tickets will get a "Backstage Pass" which includes a free 4x6 picture of mother and son! Order forms are in the front office. Come share a fun night with your son as an early Mother's Day gift!” CEF application update: Thank you to all families that applied for a grant through CEF. Appointments have been made for qualifying families on May 4th. If you have been given an appointment, please give yourself plenty of time to get to St. Monica High School. There are a number of different road closures in the Santa Monica area and local traffic can be unpredictable.Please note, all families looking to receive any reduction in tuition, are required to apply for CEF and process income information through FACTS. Mr. Higdon and I will be scheduling meetings with families in the coming weeks, to sign agreements for the next school year.
