January 2018 E-Letter

Dear Parents of St. Sebastian School,

Happy New Year to you and your family! We hope you had a restful break and are as excited as we are to begin the second half of the school year. The teachers and I are thrilled to have you all back.
In line with our theme of Gratitude this year, let us remind ourselves of all the blessings we have, a warm home, loving friends and family, plenty of food, our health and a beautiful school community. For all of these things, we give thanks!
Lastly, upon the recommendation of health professionals, we will take an abundance of caution to remain healthy and free from the flu. If you haven’t gotten the flu shot, there is still time. Don’t forget to wash your hands often, and if your child has a fever, please keep them home for 24 hours before allowing them to return to school.

Uniforms
Now that we’ve made it through the first half of the year all students should have their full P.E., church, and normal school uniform. Notices will go home if students are not in correct uniform. Please remember that non - St. Sebastian sweatshirts, jackets, and sweaters can be worn outside not inside. Undershirts and shorts should not be longer than the shirt sleeves or skirts worn, and can only be visible at the collarbone. Socks should be solid colors. Girls should wear white, navy, black, or grey solid color pantyhose not leggings or tights under uniform. Boys 1st grade and older must wear belts and shirts tucked in. For the church uniform, please remember your tie (boys and girls) and your sweater vest or button up sweater. Shoes should be solid black or blue, on P.E. days they can be mostly black due to athletic support needed. Lastly length of shorts for boys should be at the knee and girls jumpers and skirts should be no shorter than four fingers above the knee. Please see the school handbook for more details.

St. Sebastian Feast Day Mass and Potluck
Saint Sebastian was a man who stood up to people who persecuted him for his faith. Although shot multiple times by arrows he survived only later to experience death due to his beliefs. Today, he is known as the patron saint of athletes and soldiers. On Saturday, Jan. 20th, the church and school will celebrate him with a trilingual mass (Spanish, French, and English) at 5 pm and a community potluck to follow in the school cafeteria. Middle school students will write a short script for a reenactment of St. Sebastian’s life and perform it this day. Help by bringing a dessert dish or brewing coffee we would really appreciate it.

Dual Language Immersion Fair
On January 20th from 10AM-1PM come celebrate the growth of our Dual Language Immersion Programs in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, by joining us for a family filled bilingual day at St. Alphonsus Catholic School https://goo.gl/maps/4oWtbLsYpKF2 .Students who join us in their school uniforms will earn a free dress day the following Monday :)

Catholic Schools Week Mass and Meal Open House
On Sunday, January 28th at 9 AM, Saint Sebastian School will kick off Catholic Schools Week by hosting its second Open House. All current and prospective students and parents are invited to join in school uniform. This Mass will be celebrated at 9 AM and it will be bilingual. Families that refer a student that enrolls at Saint Sebastian will be entered into a raffle to receive a full month of tuition paid for for one child in the 2018-19 school year. 

National Catholic Schools Week
From Jan. 28th - Feb. 2nd our Nation celebrates Catholic schools. Each day we will highlight an aspect of our school that makes us who we are. On Sunday we’ll kick off with an Open House Family Mass and Meal to celebrate our parish. Monday, is community day so we will volunteer in our community. Tuesday, we celebrate our students. Wednesday, we celebrate our Nation by honoring the different countries our families come from at our cultural presentations and international potluck lunch. Thursday we celebrate vocations and so we’ll have a career day. Friday we celebrate our faculty, staff and teachers. Sign up to volunteer throughout the week, signup.com link will be sent out soon.

WCEA SCHOOL ACCREDITATION 
Our school faculty has been working diligently these past few months, studying the various aspects of our school and writing the chapters of our Self Study document, Improving Student Learning: A Self Study Process for Catholic Elementary Schools. This process of documenting our school’s achievement toward our goals that were established during our previous visit in 2016 will ensure we continue to be accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association the Catholic Schools Accrediting Commission. We are currently on schedule and would love your feedback. If you are interested please stop by the school office to speak to Sra. Harty about obtaining a copy. The plan is for the final document to be completed by early Feb. Please hold the school community in your prayers as we undergo this important process for our school improvement and accreditation.

IMPORTANT RE-ENROLLMENT INFORMATION
For Returning Students
Feb 9th – Early registration deadline. Spot not guaranteed after this date. If you do not receive tuition assistance your Tuition Agreement will be sent home with your (oldest) son/daughter. Please return it as soon as possible.
For New Siblings
If your family has any younger children that wish to enroll the deadline to submit an application is also February 9th. See Mr. Higdon in the front office for more details.
Need Tuition Assistance for 2018-2019?
If you need tuition assistance you must make an appointment to meet with Mrs. Harty between the hours of 7am - 3:30 pm Jan. 29th - Feb. 9th. Bring a copy of your 2016 or 2017 W2s and 1040 tax forms. This process will also help you apply for CEF.

¡Feliz año nuevo para usted y su familia! Esperamos que hayan disfrutado de un rico descanso. Los maestros y yo estamos emocionados de tenerlos con nosotros de nuevo.
Siguiendo con el tema escolar del año de gratitude, demos gracias por todas las bendiciones que tenemos, un hogar calientito, amigos y familia que nos quieren, comida a nuestra disposición, nuestra salud, y una bella comunidad escolar. ¡Por todas estas cosas damos gracias!
Finalmente, debido a las recomendaciones de los médicos, tomaremos mucha precaución para permanecer libres de la influenza y saludables. Si no ha recibido la vacuna de la influenza, todavía hay tiempo. No olviden lavarse las manos frecuentemente, y si su hijo/a tiene fiebre favor de mantenerlos en casa por 24 horas antes de enviarlos a la escuela nuevamente.

Uniformes
Ahora que hemos completado la primera parte del año escolar todos los estudiantes deben tener su uniforme completo de educación física, de la iglesia, y uniforme regular. Se les mandará infracciones a aquellos estudiantes que no traen el uniforme completo y correcto Favor de recordar que las sudaderas, chaquetas, y suéteres que no dicen San Sebastián solo se pueden usar afuera no adentro. Las camisas y shorts que se usan debajo del uniforme no deben ser más largos que la manga de la blusa, camisa o falda. Solo se puede ver en el cuello. Los calcetines deben ser de colores sólidos. Niñas deben usar pantimedias de color sólido, blanco, azul marino, negras, o grises. No pueden ser “tights” o “leggings.” Niños de primero en adelante deben usar cinto y la camisa debe ir siempre bien fajada. Para el uniforme de la iglesia, favor de recordar la corbata (niños y niñas) al igual que el chaleco o suéter. Zapatos deben ser completamente negros o azules, los días de educación física pueden ser mayormente azules o negros debido a la dificultad de encontrar zapatos atléticos de este color. Los pantalones cortos para los niños deben llegar a la rodilla y las faldas para las niñas no deben estar más de cuatro dedos arriba de la rodilla. Favor de leer el manual de la escuela que está disponible en el sitio web de la escuela.
 
Convivio y celebración del día de San Sebastián
San Sebastián fue un hombre quien fue perjudicado por su fe. Aunque fue herido varias veces con flechas, sobrevivió y después fue matado por defender su fe, se convirtió en mártir. Hoy en día se le conoce como el santo de atletas y soldados. El 20 de enero, la iglesia junto con la escuela celebrará una misa trilingüe (Inglés, Español, y Francés) a las 5 pm y un convivio después. Los estudiantes de middle school harán una presentación de la vida de San Sebastián este dia. Ayude y traiga un postre o ayudenos a hacer café. 
 
Feria de programas de doble inmersión 
Venga a celebrar el crecimiento de nuestros programas de doble inmersión en la arquidiócesis de Los Angeles, en un dia familiar y bilingüe en la escuela St. Alphonsus Catholic School https://goo.gl/maps/4oWtbLsYpKF2 . Estudiantes quien nos acompañan en uniforme serán otorgados un dia sin uniforme el próximo lunes :)
Open house y  misa familiar con comida
El domingo 28 de enero, tendremos nuestra segunda Open House. Empezaremos con misa a las 9AM y despues un Open House de 10 AM A 1 PM. Invitamos a familias actuales y futuras que asistan. Si usted refiere a una familia y se llegan a inscribir, usted entrara a una rifa para posiblemente recibir un mes de colegiatura gratis para uno de sus hijos durante el año escolar 2018-19.
 
Semana nacional de las escuelas católicas
Desde el 28 de enero hasta el 2 de febrero nuestra nación celebra las escuelas católicas. Cada día celebraremos un aspecto de nuestra escuela que nos define. El domingo empezaremos con un Open House y misa familiar con comida para celebrar a nuestra parroquia. Lunes es día de comunidad así que haremos voluntariado en nuestra comunidad. El martes celebramos a nuestros estudiantes, y miércoles a nuestra nación con presentaciones culturales y un convivio de comidas internacionales para reconocer a nuestras familias que vienen de distintos países.  Jueves celebraremos las vocaciones y tendremos un día donde vendrán a hablar profesionales con nosotros. El viernes celebraremos a los maestros y el personal de la escuela. Si a usted le gustaría ayudar con algun evento favor de inscribirse. El enlace para apuntarse será enviado dentro de poco. 

Acreditacion de WCEA escolar 
Nuestros maestros estan trabajando diligentemente estos meses, estudiando los aspectos diferentes de nuestra escuela y escribiendo los capítulos de nuestro documento, Improving Student Learning: A Self Study Process for Catholic Elementary Schools. Este proceso de documentar los logros que hemos alcanzado al cumplir nuestras metas establecidas durante nuestra visita en el 2016 asegurará que sigamos acreditados por la Comision de acreditacion de Escuelas Católicas, Western Catholic Educational Association. Vamos bien según nuestra línea de tiempo y nos encantaría su retroalimentación. Si se interesa en leer el documento favor de pasar por la oficina de la escuela para hablar con la Sra. Harty para obtener una copia. El plan es finalizar el documento para principios de febrero. Por favor mantenga nuestra escuela en sus oraciones mientras pasamos por este proceso importante de acreditación.

9 de febrero - fecha límite para registración temprana. Si no necesita asistencia financiera le enviaremos su contrato de colegiatura con su hijo/a mayor. Regréselo lo más pronto posible.
Nuevos Hermanos
Si su familia tiene hijos menores que quisieran inscribir la fecha límite es 9 de febrero. Favor de hablar con el Sr. Higdon en la oficina para más detalles
Necesita ayuda financiera para el año escolar 2018-2019?
Si necesita asistencia financiera favor de hacer una cita con la Sra. Harty entre 7 am - 3:30 pm el 29 de enero hasta el 9 de febrero. Traiga una copia de sus impuestos del 2016 o 2017 y formulario 1040. Este proceso también le ayudará llenar su solicitud de CEF.
