January 2017 E-Letter

Dear Parents of St. Sebastian School,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family! We hope you had a restful break and are as excited as we are to begin the second half of the school year. The teachers and I are thrilled to have you all back.

On the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany we remember the magi that brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to baby Jesus. Let us all challenge ourselves to think of what gifts we will offer Jesus this year. Will we offer him more time in prayer, selfless acts of charity, or the gift of being present to friends and those in need? I look forward to taking this challenge on with all of you and to an amazing rest of the school year

Winter Highlights
Schedules
Recess schedules as well as middle school schedules were altered slightly to allow for larger blocks of time to be dedicated to math and reading. Recesses will remain the same length, but have been moved to improve student learning.

Also our K and 1st grade classes have switched languages for the morning. 1st grade will now have Spanish in the morning and K will now have English in the morning.

Uniforms
Now that we’ve made it through the first half of the year all students should have their full P.E., church, and normal school uniform. Notices will go home if students are not in correct uniform. Please remember that non - St. Sebastian sweatshirts, jackets, and sweaters can be worn outside not inside. Undershirts and shorts should not be longer than the shirt sleeves or skirts worn, and can only be visible at the collarbone. Socks should be higher than the ankle, no ankle socks. Girls should wear white, navy, black, or grey solid color pantyhose not leggings or tights under uniform. Boys 1st grade and older must wear belts and shirts tucked in. For the church uniform, please remember your tie (boys and girls) and your sweater vest or button up sweater. Shoes should be solid black or blue, on P.E. days they can be mostly black due to athletic support needed. Lastly length of shorts for boys should be at the knee and girls jumpers and skirts should be no shorter than four fingers above the knee. Please see the school handbook for more details.

Farewell and Welcome
Ms. Brenna our aftercare teacher has found a full time position, we are happy for this wonderful opportunity that has come her way. We will miss her here, but welcome Ms. Elise who will work with our TK-2nd graders M-F from 3-6pm.

We also welcome our school Counselor Ms. Sarah Listas. Please read her brief bio: Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York I am a true Brooklyn woman at heart. I completed my undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Women’s Studies from Hunter College, CUNY and went on to study Social Work at Hunter College School of Social Work. I moved to Los Angeles a little over a year ago, to achieve a lifelong dream of living by the ocean and on the West Coast. When I am not working, I enjoy hiking and playing with my rescue dog Miss Fox. I love working with and helping people. My true passion in life is to make a difference in the lives of young people. I am so excited to be a part of the St. Sebastian School team!

St. Sebastian Feast Day Mass and Potluck
Saint Sebastian was a man who stood up to people who persecuted him for his faith. Although shot multiple times by arrows he survived only later to experience death due to his beliefs. Today he is known as the patron saint of athletes and soldiers. On Jan. 20th, the church and school will celebrate him with a trilingual mass (Spanish, French, and English) at 6:30 pm and a community potluck to follow.

McTeacher’s Night
On Jan. 25th come help our school raise money by stopping by for a coffee, sweet treat, indulge in a burger and fries or healthy dinner option like a salad. The school will earn a percentage of sales and the coolest part is that our very own St. Sebastian teachers and staff will be working behind the counter. Who knows they might even be dressed up as the hamburgler! Location and time TBD.

Bring a Friend to School Day
On Friday January 27th, we are inviting students and families to bring a friend to Saint Sebastian for a day.  We want to share the great experiences at Saint Sebastian School and bring in more families to our community.  More information will go out from the admissions office this week.  Families that refer a student that enrolls at Saint Sebastian will be eligible to receive a reduction in registration fee for the 2017-18 school year.

Mass and Meal Open House
On Sunday, January 29th at 10AM, Saint Sebastian School will kick off Catholic Schools Week by hosting its second Open House. If you know any families that might be interested in joining us, please have them call the school to RSVP and invite them to our Mass. This Mass will be celebrated at 12 pm and it will be bilingual. Families that refer a student that enrolls at Saint Sebastian will be eligible to receive a reduction in registration fee for the 2017-18 school year. Instead of a meal this day we’ll be offering light refreshments.

National Catholic Schools Week
From Jan. 29th - Feb. 4th our Nation celebrates Catholic schools. Each day we will highlight an aspect of our school that makes us who we are. On Sunday we’ll kick off with an Open House Family Mass and Meal to celebrate our parish. Monday is community day so we will volunteer in our community. Tuesday we celebrate our students. Wednesday we celebrate our Nation by honoring the different countries our families come from at our cultural presentations and international potluck lunch. Friday we celebrate our faculty, staff and teachers and organize a breakfast for them. If you or a family member would like to sign up to help with Career Day or to give a Cultural Presentation in your son/daughter’s classroom please call the school to sign up. 

School Improvement Day
School improvement day has been moved to March 4th from 9am to 1pm. Dad’s Club would like to invite you all (that includes dads), to help clean, fix, and improve our kids school even further. In addition, we’d like to plan a BBQ or a pot-luck for everyone to enjoy a nice lunch and get to know each other better. We’re open for suggestions! If anyone has any special talents such as gardening/landscaping, technician, etc., please let us know. 


Great Copy Paper Fundraiser!
This month we are having a copy paper fundraiser. For every ream (500 pages) of paper donated, not only will you receive fundraising credit by bringing in your receipt but you will also receive 15 minutes of volunteer hours.  Thank you!


Chocolate Sale
We still have 21 outstanding boxes of chocolates. If you have one of these boxes, please submit money as soon as possible if you haven’t done so. Thank you all for your support.

Al acercarse la fiesta de los reyes magos recordamos que los reyes le trajeron oro, incienso, y mirra al niño Jesús. Así como los reyes le trajeron regalos, propongámonos hacerle un regalo a Jesús. ¿Qué regalo podríamos ofrecerle? Tal vez más tiempo en oración, actos caritativos, o el regalo de estar realmente presente para nuestros amigos o aquellos que más nos necesitan. Gracias por tomar este reto junto conmigo y que el resto del año escolar sea de lo mejor.

Anuncios de la temporada de invierno
Horarios
Los horarios de los de la secundaria y de recreo han sido modificados levemente para darnos la oportunidad de tener más tiempo en lectura y matemáticas. El recreo permanecerá igual de largo pero ahora empezará más temprano. Esto ayudará a mejorar el ambiente académico de los estudiantes.
 
Los horarios de los estudiantes de Kínder y primero también cambiaron. Primero tendrá Español en la mañana y Kínder tendrá Inglés en la mañana.
 
Uniformes
Ahora que hemos completado la primera parte del año escolar todos los estudiantes deben tener su uniforme completo de educación física, de la iglesia, y uniforme regular. Se les mandará infracciones a aquellos estudiantes que no traen el uniforme completo y correcto Favor de recordar que las sudaderas, chaquetas, y suéteres que no dicen San Sebastián solo se pueden usar afuera no adentro. Las camisas y shorts que se usan debajo del uniforme no deben ser más largos que la manga de la blusa, camisa o falda. Solo se puede ver en el cuello. Los calcetines deben cubrir el tobillo, no se permiten calcetines más cortos. Niñas deben usar pantimedias de color sólido, blanco, azul marino, negras, o grises. No pueden ser “tights” o “leggings.” Niños de primero en adelante deben usar cinto y la camisa debe ir siempre bien fajada. Para el uniforme de la iglesia, favor de recordar la corbata (niños y niñas) al igual que el chaleco o suéter. Zapatos deben ser completamente negros o azules, los días de educación física pueden ser mayormente azules o negros debido a la dificultad de encontrar zapatos atléticos de este color. Los pantalones cortos para los niños deben llegar a la rodilla y las faldas para las niñas no deben estar más de cuatro dedos arriba de la rodilla. Favor de leer el manual de la escuela que está disponible en el sitio web de la escuela.
 
Adios y bienvenida
Srta. Brenna nuestra maestra de después de escuela ha encontrado trabajo de tiempo completo. Estamos contentos por esta oportunidad que se le ha presentado. La echaremos mucho de menos, pero le damos la bienvenida a Ms. Elise quien trabajará con nuestros estudiantes de TK a 2 grado de lunes a viernes de 3-6pm.
 
También le damos la bienvenida a Srta. Sarah Listas, nuestra nueva consejera. Favor de leer su biografía: Yo nací y fui criada en Brooklyn, New York soy una mujer totalmente Brooklyn de corazón. Termine mis estudios universitarios en Psicología y Estudios sobre la Mujer en Hunter College, y después estudié para ser trabajadora social. Tengo un año viviendo en Los Ángeles intentando vivir mi sueño de vivir cerca del océano y en California. En mi tiempo libre me gusta hacer hiking y jugar con mi perrita Miss Fox. Me encanta ayudar a las personas y hacer eso como mi profesión. Lo que me apasiona es ayudar a personas jóvenes y hacer una diferencia en su vida. Estoy muy contenta de formar parte del equipo en la escuela San Sebastián.
 
Convivio y celebración del día de San Sebastián
San Sebastián fue un hombre quien fue perjudicado por su fe. Aunque fue herido varias veces con flechas, sobrevivió y después fue matado por defender su fe, se convirtió en mártir. Hoy en día se le conoce como el santo de atletas y soldados. El 20 de enero, la iglesia junto con la escuela celebrará una misa trilingüe (Inglés, Español, y Francés) a las 6:30 pm y un convivio después.

Noche McTeacher’s 
El 25 de enero venga a tomarse un café, un postre, una hamburguesa y papitas, o una opción más saludable como una ensalada. La escuela recibirá un porcentaje de las ventas y esto nos ayudará a recaudar fondos. ¡Lo mejor de todo es que nuestros propios maestros estarán trabajando en la cocina y hasta podrían estar disfrazados del personaje el hamburgler! La localización y el horario serán fijados dentro de poco.
 
Traiga un amigo a la escuela
El viernes 27 de enero, estamos invitando a estudiantes y familias que traigan a un amigo a San Sebastián por un día. Queremos mostrarles a otras personas lo excelente que es ser parte de nuestra escuela e incrementar la matrícula. Mandaremos más información pronto. Las familias que refieren a un estudiante que se matricula serán elegibles para recibir un descuento en su costo de registración para el año escolar 2017-18.
 
Open house y  misa familiar con comida
El domingo 29 de enero a las 10 AM, tendremos nuestra segunda Open House.  Si conoce a familias que están interesadas en la escuela, invítelos a la misa y favor de pedirles que llamen a la escuela 310-473-3337 para que reserven su lugar http://www.saintsebastianschool.com/fall-open-house-2016.html . Esta misa será a las 12 pm y será bilingüe. Si usted refiere a una familia y se llegan a inscribir, usted será elegible para recibir una reducción en el costo de su registración para el año escolar 2017-18.
 
Semana nacional de las escuelas católicas
Desde el 29 de enero hasta el 4 de febrero nuestra nación celebra las escuelas católicas. Cada día celebraremos un aspecto de nuestra escuela que nos define. El domingo empezaremos con un Open House y misa familiar con comida para celebrar a nuestra parroquia. Lunes es día de comunidad así que haremos voluntariado en nuestra comunidad. El martes celebramos a nuestros estudiantes, y miércoles a nuestra nación con presentaciones culturales en los salones y un convivio de comidas internacionales para reconocer a nuestras familias que vienen de distintos países. Jueves celebraremos las vocaciones y tendremos un día donde vendrán a hablar profesionales con nosotros. El viernes haremos un desayuno de apreciación para los maestros y el personal de la escuela.

Día de mejoramiento escolar
La fecha ha cambiado, ahora será sábado 4 de marzo de 9am a 1pm. Al Club de Papás les gustaría invitarlos a todos (incluyendo a los papás) a limpiar, arreglar, y mejorar la escuela de nuestros niños.  También nos gustaría organizar una parrillada o convivio para que todos disfruten de un rico almuerzo y tomemos tiempo para conocernos un poco más. Si tiene sugerencias háganoslas saber.  Si algunos de ustedes tienen talentos especiales como jardinería/landscaping, o son técnicos etc., déjenoslo saber.
 
Recaudación de papel
Este mes tendremos una campaña para recaudar papel para fotocopias. Por cada paquete (500 hojas) que usted done, no solo le contara como crédito para su compromiso de $300 (con recibo) también recibirá 15 minutos de horas voluntarias.  Gracias!

Venta de chocolates
Aún tenemos 21 cajas de chocolates que no han sido entregados. Si usted tiene una de estas cajas favor de entregar el dinero lo más pronto posible. Gracia por su apoyo.
