Dear Parents of St. Sebastian School, Throughout the month of April we ALL worked together to bring to life an incredibly successful school festival. Thank you to every committee member, parent, student, teacher, sponsor, donor, and visitor that joined us on our special weekend. This would not have been possible without every fundraiser, donation, and your gift of time. Thank you all for your willingness to work together in our efforts to raise as much as we have. That being said, thank you for the love you show our school! You never stop amazing me with your collaborative spirit and generosity! As we approach the last five weeks of school we look forward to our last student achievement testing (STAR Tests), our 2nd graders receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist, and the graduation of our beloved 8th grade class. Preschool Luau and End of the Year Celebration We would like to celebrate the end of the year together with a Luau on June 14th, Thursday at 9:30am. St. Sebastian Camping Trip-CANCELLED - Instead Memorial Day Picnic Potluck Meet-Up @ Stoner Park 11 am No one was available to lead the camping trip, so it has been cancelled this year. May 24th will be a 1pm dismissal and Friday May 25th will be a regular day of school. Instead join those who can make it for a picnic potluck Monday, May 28th at 11 am . We hope you had a wonderful Easter with your family. On Easter, Fr. German spoke beautifully to the congregation about how this celebration in the church reminds us, that through our baptism, we are called to be priests, prophets, and kings. God calls us to be priests to minister to others, prophets so that we can announce the good news, and kings so that we can serve others. As we approach this new trimester, filled with many activities, celebrations, and fundraisers, may God grant us all the courage to answer the call, to do exactly as he has sent us forth to do, to minister, announce the good news and serve others. This process will also help you apply for CEF. 42nd Annual School festival “Damos Gracias” Paid Dress Days Starting April 11th students can wear jeans and their festival t-shirt to school if you make a donation of $5. Other Paid Dress Days include the 18th, 25th-27th T-Shirt orders were due on Thur. March 29th. We’ve ordered extra so that you even if you missed the order deadline you can still help us promote our festival! Raffle tickets - The family who sells the most will be eligible for half off tuition for one child during the month of Jan. 2019. Sign up to Volunteer - link to be sent out soon. If you can’t volunteer the day of help us sell raffle tickets after Mass on Sunday, April 15th and 22nd. Performances - Come watch your son/daughter perform stay tuned for. WCEA SCHOOL ACCREDITATION A Visiting Committee came to our school March 20, 21, and 22nd. Our school faculty, students, and parents spoke to the committee about the various aspects of our school and the chapters of our Self Study document, Improving Student Learning: A Self Study Process for Catholic Elementary Schools . Although the final results won’t arrive until mid summer, the visit was a positive one and the committee had many glowing remarks about our school. Great things are happening at St. Sebastian and it’s all because of YOU, our fantastic parents! Thank you to all parents who have completed the re-enrollment process. The current school year is still underway and we are already making plans for a fantastic 2018-2019 school year. The school was able to purchase new technology. In the next couple of days we’ll be distributing brand new Chromebooks to each of our 5th -8th grade students. Students will be using these at school and at home to complete their class assignments and access online curriculum! Another grant application is currently being submitted for new iPads in the lower grades. Keep us in your prayers! In 6 weeks our 42nd Annual Spring School Festival whose theme this year will be “Damos Gracias” will take place on April 28 and 29. Planning for an amazingly successful festival is underway. A friendly reminder to all families that six hours of your volunteer commitment is completed at this event. Holy Week Holy Week is the culminating week before Easter and the end of the Lenten season. WCEA SCHOOL ACCREDITATION March 20, 21, and 22nd a Visiting Committee will be at our school. Please welcome them on to our campus. This process of documenting our school’s achievement toward our goals that were established during our previous visit in 2016 will ensure we continue to be accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association the Catholic Schools Accrediting Commission. El Jueves Santo, 30 de marzo los grados de TK -8vo. participarán en el servicio de Lavado de Pies en la iglesia a las 8am. Los alumnos deberán usar el uniforme de la iglesia el jueves 30 de marzo. WCEA SCHOOL ACCREDITATION El 20, 21, y 22 de marzo un Comité de Visita estará en nuestra escuela. Por favor démosles la bienvenida a nuestro campus. Rodriguez and Ms. Littleworth Uniforms Now that we’ve made it through the first half of the year all students should have their full P.E., church, and normal school uniform. Notices will go home if students are not in correct uniform. Please remember that non - St. Sebastian sweatshirts, jackets, and sweaters can be worn outside not inside. Undershirts and shorts should not be longer than the shirt sleeves or skirts worn, and can only be visible at the collarbone. Socks should be solid colors. Girls should wear white, navy, black, or grey solid color pantyhose not leggings or tights under uniform. Boys 1st grade and older must wear belts and shirts tucked in. For the church uniform, please remember your tie (boys and girls) and your sweater vest or button up sweater. Shoes should be solid black or blue, on P.E. days they can be mostly black due to athletic support needed. Lastly length of shorts for boys should be at the knee and girls jumpers and skirts should be no shorter than four fingers above the knee. Please see the school handbook for more details. St. Sebastian Feast Day Mass and Potluck Saint Sebastian was a man who stood up to people who persecuted him for his faith. Although shot multiple times by arrows he survived only later to experience death due to his beliefs. Today, he is known as the patron saint of athletes and soldiers. On Saturday, Jan. 20th, the church and school will celebrate him with a trilingual mass (Spanish, French, and English) at 5 pm and a community potluck to follow in the school cafeteria. Middle school students will write a short script for a reenactment of St. Sebastian’s life and perform it this day. Help by bringing a dessert dish or brewing coffee we would really appreciate it. Dual Language Immersion Fair On January 20th from 10AM-1PM come celebrate the growth of our Dual Language Immersion Programs in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, by joining us for a family filled bilingual day at St. Alphonsus Catholic School https://goo.gl/maps/4oWtbLsYpKF2 .Students who join us in their school uniforms will earn a free dress day the following Monday :) Catholic Schools Week Mass and Meal Open House On Sunday, January 28th at 9 AM, Saint Sebastian School will kick off Catholic Schools Week by hosting its second Open House. All current and prospective students and parents are invited to join in school uniform. This Mass will be celebrated at 9 AM and it will be bilingual. National Catholic Schools Week From Jan. 28th - Feb. 2nd our Nation celebrates Catholic schools. Each day we will highlight an aspect of our school that makes us who we are. On Sunday we’ll kick off with an Open House Family Mass and Meal to celebrate our parish. Monday, is community day so we will volunteer in our community. Tuesday, we celebrate our students. Wednesday, we celebrate our Nation by honoring the different countries our families come from at our cultural presentations and international potluck lunch. WCEA SCHOOL ACCREDITATION Our school faculty has been working diligently these past few months, studying the various aspects of our school and writing the chapters of our Self Study document, Improving Student Learning: A Self Study Process for Catholic Elementary Schools. This process of documenting our school’s achievement toward our goals that were established during our previous visit in 2016 will ensure we continue to be accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association the Catholic Schools Accrediting Commission. Uniformes Ahora que hemos completado la primera parte del año escolar todos los estudiantes deben tener su uniforme completo de educación física, de la iglesia, y uniforme regular. Se les mandará infracciones a aquellos estudiantes que no traen el uniforme completo y correcto Favor de recordar que las sudaderas, chaquetas, y suéteres que no dicen San Sebastián solo se pueden usar afuera no adentro. Las camisas y shorts que se usan debajo del uniforme no deben ser más largos que la manga de la blusa, camisa o falda. Solo se puede ver en el cuello. Los calcetines deben ser de colores sólidos. Niñas deben usar pantimedias de color sólido, blanco, azul marino, negras, o grises. No pueden ser “tights” o “leggings.” Niños de primero en adelante deben usar cinto y la camisa debe ir siempre bien fajada. Para el uniforme de la iglesia, favor de recordar la corbata (niños y niñas) al igual que el chaleco o suéter. This day we celebrate that Mary appeared in the form of an indigenous woman to a poor and humble man named Juan Diego. He has since been named a saint and both him and Our Lady form a huge part of our Catholic Hispanic Heritage. On Tuesday. Dec. 12th at 8:15 am we will have a special play presented in place of morning assembly by our 3rd and 4th graders. Students will gather, as we always do, and place backpacks in their classrooms. Then all will meet in the cafeteria to watch a brief play. Parents are welcome to join us. Las Posadas 12/15 10 am Nine days before Christmas in Mexico and in other Spanish speaking countries they celebrate the coming of Jesus by reenacting Mary and Joseph asking for a place to stay on their way to Bethlehem. They do this by singing a traditional song that is sung as they go door to door in their neighborhood until they are finally given a place to stay. At this house they then are offered a meal and break a pinata. The traditional piñata has seven horns representing the seven deadly sins. The stick used to break it represents the struggle between good and evil, and the candies that fall down are the grace God gives us to not sin again. At school we will celebrate a posada on the Wednesday Dec. 15th from 10-11am. We are looking for three pinatas to be donated, a stick and candy for each. Christmas Concert and Dinner on Dec. 15th It is our pleasure to invite Preschool - 8th grade parents to our annual Christmas Concert and Dinner on Dec. 15th. A spaghetti dinner and drink for $7, or 4 dinners for $25 if you preorder, will be served from 5-6pm and the Christmas Concert will begin at 6:30pm. Este día celebramos que María se le apareció en forma de una mujer indígena a Juan Diego un hombre pobre y humilde. Él ha sido nombrado santo y tanto él como ella forman una gran parte de nuestra herencia hispana católica. El martes 12 de dic. en la escuela los estudiantes de 3 y 4 presentaran una pequeña obra en la cafetería de la escuela a las 8:15 am. Todos estan invitados. Las Posadas 15 de dic. De 10 a 11 am. En México y otros países hispanohablantes, nueve días antes de navidad se celebra la llegada del niño Jesús a través de una pequeña obra acompañada por un canto tradicional y una fiesta. Esto se hace en un barrio donde la gente va pasando de casa en casa hasta que una finalmente les da hospedaje. En la canción vivimos la larga jornada que José y María pasaron en camino a Belén donde iba casa por casa pidiendo un lugar donde pasar la noche. Finalmente llegan y ahí es donde se come y hay piñata. La piñata tradicional tiene siete cuernos estos representan los siete pecados mortales. El palo para quebrar la significa la batalla entre el bien y el mal. Los dulces que caen representan la gracia que Dios nos da para arrepentirnos y no pecar más. En la escuela celebraremos una posada el viernes 15 de dic. De 10 a 11 am. Buscamos donación de tres piñatas, palos, y dulces. It starts November 17th through December 8th. The chocolate drive is one of our largest fundraisers here at St. Sebastian School. The school receives 50% of all sales and our goal this year is to raise $8,400! On Friday, November 17th the oldest student of every family will be sent home with 2 boxes of chocolate bars. Prizes will be given to the 2 top sellers and top class. New fantastic prizes this year include the money machine, a virtual reality headset, a free dress day, and more! Winter Admissions Open House Thank you to those who helped with our first open house! On Sunday, January 28th from 12PM-2PM, Saint Sebastian School will host its second Winter Open House in conjunction with the start of Catholic Schools Week. I am proud to announce that at our first Family Mass and Meal we made $1600 and our Dine Out Night at Shakey’s made close to $500. Thank you to everyone who came out in support of our school. Construction has begun on the new bathrooms and sinks. As a school community we will attend Mass at 9 am and then share some time together afterwards. Time, Talent, and Treasure As you read in your tuition agreement, this year, our school will have a commitment log to keep track of each family’s Time, Talent and Treasure to the school. This means we would like for you and your family to think of innovative and creative ways that you can help our school, for example taking up the landscaping, helping us paint, run open houses, provide lunch for teachers once every two months, or spearhead two school improvement days throughout the year. These are just ideas. Aside from these 3-4 projects, we ask that each family volunteer three hours at our fall festival and six hours at our spring festival. During our chocolate sale, families will sell two boxes each, and during the spring festival will sell $100 worth of raffle tickets. We look forward to hearing what you would like to do for our school! Uniforms If you are brand new to our school our uniforms are purchased through Dennis School Uniforms. You can order online on their website http://www.dennisuniform.com/# by entering our school code which is LA00SS or you can purchase them in person on Aug. 9 from 8-10 am or Aug. 10th from 5-8 pm. Gently used uniforms will be sold on Aug. 21 and 24 from 4:30-6 pm. Use chart below to guide you. They haven’t updated our list yet at their store. Que Dios los bendiga, Sra. Harty Orientaciones Virtuales Los estudiantes de nuestra escuela provienen de 32 códigos postales diferentes en el área de Los Ángeles. Reunir a tantas familias durante estos calurosos días de verano no es fácil. Hasta ahora! Por primera vez haremos nuestra orientación a través de un video. Ahí se familiarizaran con nuestro horario, pólizas, procedimientos y maestros y personal de nuestra escuela. Les mandaremos el enlace al video dentro de poco. La orientación para preescolar sera en persona, en el plantel escolar :) Horario escolar Padres en TK-8 están bienvenidos a participar en la oración de la mañana y anuncios empezando a las 7:55 am. Si no se puede quedar tome ventaja de nuestro servicio valet en la mañana empezando a las 7:20 am, el cual no podría funcionar sin nuestros generosos padres que donan de su tiempo para ayudarnos. Si usted es nuevo esto significa que estaciona su vehículo momentáneamente enfrente del portón pequeño en la calle Wyoming y nosotros nos aseguraremos que su hijo/a entre a la escuela sano y salvo. Favor de permanecer en su auto para respetar el tiempo de los otros padres que están esperando en la fila. Los viernes, los estudiantes se forman a las 7:45 am dejan sus mochilas en el salón y caminan a la iglesia con la asistencia de nuestros guardias de cruce. A las 3 pm durante la hora de salida al final del día asegúrese de seguir las mismas instrucciones de la mañana. Como comunidad escolar asistiremos a la misa de 9 am y después todos están invitados a comer y pasar el dia con nosotros. Tiempo, Talento, y Tesoro Como lo leyó en nuestro contrato de colegiatura, este año nuestra escuela tendrá un récord de los compromiso que cada familia hará en cuanto su tiempo, talento y tesoro para la escuela. Esto significa que nos gustaría pedirle a cada familia que piensen en maneras creativas e innovadoras de ayudar a nuestra escuela. Por ejemplo pudiera usted tomar el cuidado del jardín por dos meses, o ayudarnos a pintar la escuela, o estar presente en las “open houses,” traerles de comer a los maestros cada dos meses, o organizar dos días de mejoramiento escolar durante el año. Estas simplemente son ideas. Aparte de estos 3 a 4 proyectos, le pedimos a cada familia que trabaje 3 horas en el festival del otoño, 6 horas en el festival de la primavera. Durante la venta de chocolates cada quien vende dos cajas y en la primavera $100 de boletos para la rifa. Estamos emocionados por saber como usted nos ayudará en la escuela!
