Programs

Educating the Whole Child

Choir (Grades K-8)

As written in our mission statement, at St. Sebastian School, we “collaborate with families to nurture student development in mind, body, and spirit.” One important component of mind, body, and spirit is music. We are excited about our St. Sebastian School Choir! Our choir is open to all students in Kindergarten – Grade 8 and is a wonderful opportunity for our students to deepen their musical knowledge. Students will learn a wide variety of musical genres, where the main focus will be: “Catholic classics”, Gospel music, Showtunes, and popular music.

Students who participate in our choir will have many opportunities to share their talents, including:
• Friday school masses (approx. twice per month)
• Sunday mass (approx. once per month)
• Special concerts
• Special field trips (which may include community service projects, for example, to local convalescent homes)

After School Program (3:15 p.m.-6:00p.m.)
St. Sebastian is pleased to provide an after school program for students in grades Preschool-8. It is an extension of the school day and provides students with an opportunity to continue their education until 6:00 p.m. All students of Saint Sebastian School are eligible for the after school program. The After School Program is a structured program providing time for students to complete their homework and participate in sports and other activities.

Student Council: Leader Formation
St. Sebastian School is committed to developing “servant leaders and agents of change for others,” as mentioned in our School Mission Statement. To participate in the Student Council elections, students must undergo a rigorous speech writing and speech presentation process. Through weekly meetings, our Student Council moderator and 5th grade teacher, Ms. Breanne Melconian, empowers our leaders to develop programs and activities that will improve each classroom and our school as a whole.

Our young leaders are also raising money and awareness throughout our whole campus for a variety of social causes, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Holy Childhood Association. Student Council offices include our President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Class Representatives for Preschool – 8. Participation in Student Council helps our students achieve the SLEs: Serve and Lead as Faithful Catholics and Initiate Positive Change.

Open “Mic” Nights (Grades 7-8)
Our talented Middle School English teacher, Ms. Erin Rucker, has created a series of Open “Mic” (i.e. Microphone) Nights, similar to those held in universities across the country. Our students are invited in the evening to perform poetry that they have written to an audience of classmates, families, and friends. Through Open “Mic” nights, students achieve our SLEs: Always Communicate Effectively and Strive for Academic Excellence. Our middle school students improve their writing AND public speaking skills in the process. Moreover, parent response has been nothing short of enthusiastic. Ms. Rucker holds at least two Open “Mic” nights for each class each year.

Our Athletic Program keeps the Spartan Spirit alive, on the field as well as off. Organized by our Athletic Director, we have numerous offerings for our students this year. Our Athletic Program helps our students achieve the SLE: Never Stop Learning.

Pep Rallies
Students show their school spirit through energetic school cheers and friendly competition at our St. Sebastian School Pep Rallies! St. Sebastian Spartans are encouraged to wear school colors and cheer for our student athletes. Good sportsmanship and building school community are also celebrated at our three pep rallies. GO SPARTANS!

Sports Assemblies
At the end of each season, athletes are honored for their dedication and good sportsmanship at an Awards Assembly where each athlete is recognized for their participation in a sport. Awards for Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, and Coach’s Award are also presented.

Student athletes are expected to maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher while participating in a sport. Those athletes who earn “A” or “B” Honor Roll while playing a sport are honored for their dedication to their studies and their team.

Although developing a competitive spirit is important, the focus for all of our athletic teams is good sportsmanship, character-building and teamwork.

Booster Club
By popular demand! Introducing the Spartan Boosters, a major school support team comprised of enthusiastic parents, grandparents, alumni and other interested parties who wish to be involved in our students’ growth and enrichment. Our Booster Club helps raise money for our Athletic Program, Academic Programs, and other school activities.

Jog-a-thon
For two years in a row now, the Booster Club has sponsored a Jog-a-thon, that inspires all our students to be healthy and active. All students in Grades K-8 participate in this exciting event and run/walk laps for ten minutes while parents and teachers cheer them on. Teachers even participate in this community event. As teachers jog, run, and even sprint around the track, the entire student body chants and cheers. Money collected through sponsors is used to support the Athletic Program at St. Sebastian.

Free Throw-a-thon
Got a good shot? Once a year, St. Sebastian students have the opportunity to demonstrate their free throw shooting skills in a Free Throw-a-thon sponsored by the Booster Club. Students are encouraged to get family members and friends to sponsor them in this fun event. Parents join students at school to help tally the number of free throws each student makes within one minute.
